Musings on Miller

Pasted from a Jan ‘10 entry: So I’ve been reading Tropic of Cancer on and off for a couple of days now (not for the reasons you might think…esp those of you who’ve seen that “Seinfeld” episode) and don’t know quite where it’s going. I suppose like The Stranger it’s one of those reads best digested within the confines of academia…to properly evaluate and appreciate the similes, analogies, imagery blah blah blah-de-blah. But I dunno…so far, there has been the visceral stream of consciousness convulotion, religious and ethnic slurs that feel as if they exist for the sake of being deemed authentic exposition. The raw male sexuality only mildly analyzed and given shape for your enjoyment or whatever. That said though, there’s alsothe deeper, refreshing, seemingly ahead-of-his-time writing. On America, on war, on man, on life, impressions of city-based civilization, just to name a few; the staunch anti-romanticism he offers while strolling through the regularly beatified streets of Paris. He lives his life, without purantical regret or apology yet at the same not, as he embraces baser instincts with perfunctory bliss, just falling back into simplistic violence or malice for malice sake and calling it freedom.
Anyway…I’ll possibly write more when I finish it. =) Anyone else read this? HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVERYBODY! =]
